MEL HABER - Occasionally you meet a person who has done so many things and achieved so much that you could listen to him for hours.
Mel Haber's family moved to Miami, Florida when he was a boy and he has been a witness to and a participant in much of the area's illustrious show-business history. During the '40s and early '50s he hosted a local radio program where, where he became known as "Uncle Mel," he read newspaper comic strips to children and made regular special appearances on WTVJ Channel 4. He has been fondly known by that name ever since.

In that capacity he assisted in the opening of the landmark Miracle Theater in Coral Gables. He also worked with the leading movie stars of the day to promote their films -- Marilyn Monroe, Susan Hayward, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart, and Rita Hayworth to mention a few. Mel also managed the legendary Lincoln Theater on Miami Beach's famous Lincoln Road -- now the home of the New World Symphony.

In the late-'50s, Mel got involved in real estate and mortgage brokering. He served a term as President of the Mortgage Brokers' Association and was instrumental in the passage of the Mortgage Brokers Act of 1959. As Mel's reputation as a successful and level-headed businessman grew, people began asking him for financial advise and another career opened up to him.

Among those who sought Mel's guidance was Harry Wayne Casey -- "KC" of KC and the Sunshine Band. KC had fallen on difficult times -- his finances and career were a mess. Mel stepped in as KC's business and personal manager. After getting KC get back on his feet, Mel kept them working with new record deals, concerts, endorsements, and international music licensing. Things had come full circle and Mel was back in show business.
Soon after, Haber was approached by one of the very first "boy band" groups called Menudo. Over two years, Mel cleared up their legal and financial mess, renamed them MDO and reestablished them with a Sony recording contract and a new #1 hit in the Latin market.
Then came Tito Puente, Jr., who not only had a downturn in his career, but who was also trying to deal with the recent death of his famous father and various problems with his father's estate. Under Mel's guidance, Tito has been able to once again concentrate on his recording and performing career. While, one of Mel's most recent business advisement clients is Luther "Luke" Campbell of 2 Live Crew.

Throughout his career, Mel has believed in giving back to the community where he lives and does business. Over the years, Mel has done an amazing amount of volunteer work, serving as President of B'nai B'rith, being a prime mover behind the founding of Variety (now Miami) Children's Hospital, establishing the Lion's Club in Belize, and always being available to help when he can.
