The Painter : (Noel)
Cuban born Noel was raised in the environment of a theatrical family and started his ballet training at the age of four at the Escuela Provincial de Ballet de la Habana. He continued his training at La Escuela Nacional de Arte de la Habana, Cubanacan where he also studied painting. He danced in Cuba with the renowned Alonso's and toured with the company throughout Europe and Canada. Noel arrived in the U.S. in December of 1981 after a nine month engagement in Costa Rica with the Compañia Nacional de Danza as principal dancer and teacher. In the US he continued his ballet career with Ballet Concerto, Dance Miami, Boston Ballet, and New England Dinosaur Dance Company. While dancing he was given the opportunity to design sets and costumes for the companies he danced with.
In 1986, Noel retired from dancing and decided to dedicate his time to his lifelong love of painting. As an artist, he has received national recognition and has been featured in many magazines and publications including the "1989 Annual Edition of American Artists." Noel has created commission works for private and corporate collections. These include murals for the Ritz Plaza Hotel in Miami Beach, Grove Isle Hotel in Coconut Grove for which he also created the fountain at its entrance, and murals for Paradise Point Hotel in San Diego. Also a portrait of Eartha Kitt and other Private Collections and book covers for Argentinean author Alicia Borinsky. His work has been also feature in Motion Pictures. Noel also served on the Fine Arts Board of the City of Miami Beach front 1994 to 1997.
Absolut Vodka commissioned him to create the commemorative poster for "The 1989 Absolut Models for Boston Benefit for the Homeless”. In 1994 Absolut chosen Noel again, this time to create one of the umbrellas for the “DIFFA’s Pink Umbrellas Project” and then again in for “The 1998 DIFFA Dallas Jacket Collection”. Also to benefit AIDS, he created an original work entitled “We Shall Overcome” to benefit the Boston AIDS Action Committee for their ARTcetera 1988 Auction. He was also selected to create the image for New York’s “Beauty & Beyond’ 98“, to benefit Beauty Cares for the AIDS Relief Fund, and Noel was the featured Artist for Miami’s “White Party 1998” for which he created “Sueño Blanco”, to benefit CAREresource Inc. In 1999 CAREresource selected him again, this time to create the poster for Miami’s AIDS Walk 2000. He was also chosen to create the image for First Night Miami Beach 2000, for Miami’s Millennium celebration. In 2001 he was selected to create the quilt that represent Miami in the National AIDS Quilt Display. Noel was commissioned in 2202 by the City of Miami Beach to design five of the Flamingoes for the Art in Public Places, Flamingo Project.
In his theatrical works, Noel collaborated in DIFFA’s 1993 production of “Acts of Hope” as Artistic Director and Producer; he also created the commemorative poster for the event. He was invited to stage the 1996 DIFFA’s Production of Collection Rouge for its Miami Premier. More recently he was commissioned by University of Miami for it’s Festival Miami 2002 to create sets, costumes and lighting design for the production of National Ballet of Cuba’s Prima Ballerina Rosario Suarez for her ballet “Cecilia Valdez”. Noel produces his work out of his Miami’s studio.
